Enjoy the sweet, juicy taste of homegrown blueberries!Your climate region zone is one of the keys for selecting blueberry plant varieties. Gardeners in warmer climates can enjoy growing blueberry bushes by choosing one of the Southern Highbush varieties. These have chill requirements as low as 100 hours. Northern Highbush perfect for Northern regions that receive 800-1000 hours or more of chill.
Blueberries are partially self-fertile and will produce a better crop and bigger berries when planted with more than one variety for cross-pollination (any variety will do, regardless of ripening time).
Blueberries may produce a small crop the first year in the ground, however, the flowers should be removed the first year to divert energy into growing a healthy plant and root system. You can expect to harvest berries the second year your plant is in the ground (or a pot). Blueberries have early, mid and late fruiting varieties which can provide your garden with up to 90 days of fruit by planting some from each.
Grow your blueberries in acidic, well–drained soil. Cottonseed meal is an excellent fertilizer for blueberries along with good quality compost and peat moss.
